Empowering Futures: OVC Care and Support Program

Restoring hope, building resilience, and protecting the most vulnerable.

To enhance the well-being of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and families affected by HIV/AIDS, Pro Pride has implemented a series of comprehensive care and support programs since 2005. In partnership with Save the Children USA and with financial support from USAID, Pro Pride launched the PC3 Program in Dire Dawa and six towns of East and West Hararghe Zones in the Oromia Region. Later, through the Yekokeb Berhan Program for Highly Vulnerable Children (HVC), Pro Pride expanded its impact in West Gojjam Zone of the Amhara Region in partnership with Pact Ethiopia and USAID.

Impacts Achieved

  • Reached over 27,000 OVC and their families in Oromia with holistic care and support.
  • Supported 15,272 highly vulnerable children in six towns of Amhara Region between 2012–2016.
  • Improved children’s access to education, health services, legal protection, and psychosocial care.
  • Empowered households with economic strengthening packages, enabling family self-reliance and long-term resilience.
  • Formed savings and credit groups for families to promote income generation and household stability.
  • Strengthened linkages with local stakeholders including schools, health facilities, vocational centers, and microfinance institutions to ensure coordinated and sustainable service delivery.

Objectives

  • Improve the overall wellbeing of orphans and highly vulnerable children (HVC).
  • Provide integrated support covering education, health, psychosocial, legal, and economic domains.
  • Strengthen community and household systems for long-term care and protection of OVC/HVC.

Strategic Approaches

Delivered multi-dimensional support including:

  • Education (school materials, uniforms, tutorial support)
  • Health care (medical support, immunizations, HIV counseling/testing/treatment)
  • Nutrition (direct food support and home gardening)
  • Psychosocial support (home visits, counseling)
  • Shelter and hygiene (sanitation materials)
  • Legal protection (birth registration)

Engaged 19 local community organizations to take active roles in project implementation—laying the foundation for sustainability through local ownership and involvement.

Provided business training, matching funds, and organized families into savings and credit groups. This approach promoted financial resilience, improved household income, and supported long-term care for children.

Worked at household, community, regional, and national levels to ensure systems are in place for the protection and care of vulnerable children. Built partnerships with government and non-government actors to institutionalize child protection services.

Target Groups

  • Orphans and vulnerable children (OVC)
  • Highly vulnerable children (HVC)
  • Families and caregivers of OVC/HVC
  • Local community-based organizations
  • Schools, health centers, and local authorities
