Empowering communities through gender equality, advocacy, and transformative support—creating safe spaces and leadership opportunities for women and girls.
In partnership with three Non-Governmental Organizations operating in Addis Ababa, Oromia, Amhara, and Afar Regions, Pro Pride implemented a gender equality project titled “Beyond Numbers: Toward Gender Transformation” from November 2019 to April 2021 in Dire Dawa and the Somali Region. The project aimed to empower women and their institutions to advocate for the rights of women and girls.
The project was supported by UK Aid, the Embassies of Ireland, Sweden, and Norway in Ethiopia through the British Council, PACT UK, and Social Development Direct, and implemented in partnership with FAWE Ethiopia, Progynist, and SSD, with Pro Pride serving as the lead organization

To achieve these goals, Pro Pride organized community conversation sessions, provided training and technical support to women’s organizations, hosted community-wide events, and produced and broadcast tailored radio programs.
Capacity-building training was also delivered on women’s participation in politics and its positive impact on both women and the broader community. The sessions emphasized that women’s involvement in decision-making fosters inclusive leadership and brings transformative change at community and institutional levels.
Implemented from 2021 to March 2023 in partnership with FAWE Ethiopia, with financial support from UK Aid, the Embassies of Sweden and Ireland, and the Royal Norwegian Embassy through the British Council (Civil Society Support Program Phase II), this project aimed to strengthen community responses to gender-based violence and increase women’s participation in leadership and decision-making.
Pro Pride implemented the project in eleven kebeles of the Dire Dawa City Administration (nine urban and two rural), while FAWE Ethiopia led implementation in five kebeles of Debre Berhan and three kebeles of Sheno and Aleltu in the Oromia Region.
Major activities included:
Community members recognized the value of the dialogue platform and transformed the conversation groups into self-help groups, ensuring the sustainability of the initiative.
Pro Pride also worked with local government offices and women’s rights organizations to promote coordinated action against GBV and to strengthen women’s political participation.
The project concluded with a close-out meeting in March 2023, where stakeholders reflected on the project’s achievements and its contribution to transforming negative gender norms, enhancing collaboration, and promoting women’s empowerment and protection from violence.
