HIV/AIDS Prevention & Control

Pro Pride has led community- and media-based interventions from 1996 through December 2018, combating HIV transmission, stigma, and improving care for affected populations across Ethiopia.

Since 2009, Pro Pride has implemented comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention and care programs across Ethiopia—engaging vulnerable populations through community-driven peer networks and medical services. From the TransACTION Program targeting at-risk communities in Oromia and Dire Dawa, to the MULU/MARPs initiative reaching over 10,000 individuals annually in major regions, and the accelerated 2018 MULU Key Populations project that trained 684 peer educators and reached more than 27,000 people,

Approach & Strategic Focus

  • Community Mobilization & Peer Networks: Engaged high-risk communities (FSWs, youth, factory workers) using trusted peer educators.
  • Drop-in Centers (DICs): Seven strategically located DICs provided confidential biomedical care, support, and referrals.
  • Holistic & Integrated Model: Services extended beyond testing to include STI treatment, counseling, structural support (e.g., peer savings groups, GBV referral linkages), and condom distribution.
  • National Alignment: Programs contributed toward Ethiopia’s achievement of the UNAIDS 90‑90‑90 goals by strengthening both prevention and care channels.
