Community-Based Primary Health Care Program

Pro Pride has implemented a holistic Community-Based Primary Health Care Program designed to expand access to essential health services for underserved communities in the Merkato and Entoto areas of Addis Ababa. The program prioritized women, children, and youth through integrated preventive, promotive, and curative services.

Immunization & Child Health

  • Routine immunization for children under one year
  • Growth monitoring and health education for mothers

Reproductive & Maternal Health

  • Family planning services
  • Antenatal and postnatal care
  • Safe delivery services
  • Counseling on reproductive health

 Curative Services (Clinics in Merkato & Entoto)

  • General medical consultations
  • Laboratory examinations
  • Essential drugs dispensed (valued at Birr 1,112,652.90)
  • Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) for HIV
    • 11,297 people reached (7,204 women and 4,093 men)

 Environmental & Community Health

  • Hygiene and sanitation education
  • Community health information, education, and communication (IEC) activities

Program Achievements

Reach

  • 133,459 community members served (over 60% women)
  • Continuous service provided from 1996–2008 through two fully operational polyclinics

 HIV Prevention Integration

  • Counseling and linking FP, ANC, and STI clients to VCT
  • Strong referral pathways to external health facilities for:
    • ART services
    • PMTCT services
  • Reinforced connection between reproductive health and HIV prevention

 Sustainability & Transition

  • Pro Pride’s polyclinics served marginalized groups for 12 years
  • Clinics were successfully handed over to the government in 2008 to ensure long-term service continuity
