Education Support

Pro Pride has a strong track record of expanding access to quality education for children, adolescents, and adults across Ethiopia. Through long-standing partnerships with USAID, AED, Pact Ethiopia, and regional education structures, the organization has implemented impactful programs that create lasting opportunities for learners.

Girls’ Education Program (2005–2009)

Implemented in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, and Oromia regions, this USAID-funded program supported girls who completed upper primary school but were unable to continue to secondary education due to financial challenges. The program provided:
• School uniforms, textbooks, exercise books, and other supplies
• Tutorial support and mentoring from accomplished women volunteers.
Many of the girls continued to college and university, and today several are successful doctors, educators, lawyers, and engineers.

TEACH II – Transforming Education for Adults and Children in the Hinterlands (2012–2015)

In partnership with Pact Ethiopia and with USAID funding, Pro Pride supported more than 4,000 children and adults in four woredas of the Somali Region to access basic education through 28 Alternative Basic Education Centers (ABECs).

To address critical WASH gaps affecting learning, the project also:
• Constructed 14 water schemes and VIP latrines
• Established and trained Water Scheme Caretaker Committees.

These facilities benefited more than 8,472 learners and community members, improving health and supporting better learning outcomes.

Early Grade Reading Program (2013–2018)

To strengthen literacy among young learners, Pro Pride implemented an early grade reading program across 200 schools in East and West Gojjam Zones of the Amhara Region, in partnership with USAID and the Regional Education Bureau.
Key results:
• Reached 200,000 students
• Trained 4,070 teachers on effective reading instruction
• Distributed 590,350 supplementary reading books (162 titles)
• Established 1,388 reading corners and created reading centers and parks in schools and villages
The program significantly improved reading and comprehension skills and strengthened collaboration among parents, teachers, communities, and local education offices. It was widely recognized by beneficiaries and government education structures for its strong impact.

Strategic Approach:

  • Alternative Learning: Through ACCESS, Pro Pride bridged gaps for out-of-school children, helping them transition smoothly into formal education.
  • Gender-Focused Scholarship: The AGSP prioritized girls’ education with scholarships, mentoring, and life skills to reduce gender-based barriers.
  • Community-Led Literacy: Both TEACH II and READ II engaged local facilitators and literacy leaders for sustainable grassroots education.
  • WASH-Integrated Infrastructure: Projects included vital water and sanitation facilities to support attendance and learners’ health.
  • Stakeholder Participation: Community committees, schools, parents, and education bureaus actively participated in design and execution.
